Katie Thomas is a New York City–based violinist and recording artist whose career spans studio recording, live performance, orchestral and chamber music, Broadway, and contemporary music. Known for her versatility and distinctive sound, Katie has built a career moving fluidly between classical training and the recording world, bringing both technical precision and an expressive, individual voice to every project.

Her recording credits include work with a wide range of acclaimed artists, including Lewis Capaldi on “A Cure for Minds Unwell,”  Sarah Jarosz on “Johnny,” Norah Jones and John Legend on “Summertime Blue,” James Arthur on “Water,” Bebe Rexha on “Visions (Don’t Go),” Rosanne Cash on “Everyone But Me,” De La Soul on “Don’t Push Me,” Alaina Castillo on “used to,” Jimmy Fallon on “Chipmunks & Chestnuts,”  Calum Bowie on “Stay A While,” and IRIS on “Crazy,” among others.

Katie's violin performance on Sarah Jarosz’s “Johnny” appears on the 2020 album World on the Ground, which went on to win the GRAMMY Award for Best Americana Album at the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2021.

As a sought-after studio violinist, Katie records alongside 7 time Grammy nominated cellist Dave Eggar.  Together, as a violin-and-cello team, they build the sound of a full string ensemble by layering multiple tracks. This approach allows Katie to contribute as an integral part of shaping the character, texture, and emotional identity of the strings within a recording while also improvising and composing.

Katie also recorded Violin I on Robert Miller’s Ma Petite Fleur String Quartet, arranged by David Shenton, alongside violinist Erica Dicker, violist J.J. Johnson, and seven-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Dave Eggar. The project was subsequently remixed and remastered, including in Dolby Atmos, and released through St7dio-Classical as part of Miller’s Follow Your Dream project.

Her performance career extends well beyond the recording studio. Katie has performed extensively in New York City and beyond in orchestral, chamber, Broadway, and contemporary settings. Katie performs as a substitute violinist with NYC Broadway's Hamilton and earned a coveted violin chair with the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra for five consecutive seasons, an engagement for which musicians audition annually.

Classically trained at Manhattan School of Music, Katie studied violin with renowned pedagogue Lucie Robert. Her classical background remains central to the technique and musicianship she brings to her work across genres. As a concerto soloist, she has performed with various orchestras in major works of the violin repertoire, including the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.

In addition to her recording and performance work, Katie also assists with Jonathan Solars Fine Violins, where she demonstrates instruments for clients, giving them the opportunity to hear a violin from a listener's perspective rather than solely from under the ear while playing.

Outside of music, Katie is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt and trains at Jiu Livre in New York City, reflecting the same discipline, resilience, and commitment to continual growth that have shaped her musical career. Katie lives in New York City with her husband, Jonathan Solars, and their two sons. A devoted mother as well as a working artist, she and her husband are raising their children in the city while Katie continues an active professional career in recording and performance.

For Thomas, motherhood and musicianship are not competing identities, but meaningful parts of a full creative life—one in which family, artistry, strength, and an enduring curiosity continue to inform the person and musician she is becoming.
